JOB SUMMARY
The Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDS) facilitates accurate documentation in the medical record for patient care, risk of mortality/severity of illness, quality outcome measures, patient safety, and correct reimbursement. This individual provides extensive record review, interaction with physicians, APCs, health information management professionals, and coders. Active participation in team meetings and education of staff is a key role. The Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist requires knowledge of pathophysiology and disease process, basic computer skills, regulatory requirements, Core Measure, and Patient Safety Indicators, as well as, critical thinking, and deductive reasoning skills.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.
Minimum Required: Associates Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing OR Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Management.
Preferred/Optional: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: Five years of recent adult acute care experience in medical/surgical, critical care, emergency room, operating room, PACU, case management, or utilization review OR five years of hospital inpatient coding.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.
Minimum Required: Current state Registered Nurse license OR active credentials through AHIMA (RHIA).
Preferred/Optional: Active credential through ACDIS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) or CDI Apprenticeship) OR Active credentials through AHIMA (CCS).
